Oscar Category Confusion

I didn’t bother w/mere double losses.

By far the most common category diff is Bafta pushing things lead (18), with a handful of Comedy Globe nominees otherwise in supporting; Globe pushes sup twice (both ending in Actress wins), Bafta pushing sup once (Page), and Oscar disagreeing with Bafta/Globe once (Smith). Given that the 2 exceptions happened in the same year, it’s the most confusing year; it also contained Streep’s Bafta lead vs. Oscar/Globe sup. It makes me wonder what the different permutations could have been w/different campaigns. I don’t think the lead winner would have changed, but overdue Page could have won sup which I think would keep the # of winning Allen perfs the same as then Smith would have collected #2 for Room with a View in place of Wiest.
Most of the time that a mostly agreed-upon support is bumped up to lead thus helping those left behind, the sup winner doesn’t matter because he/she doesn’t get an Oscar nom anyway. Exceptions: York who lost against Hawn after all, Streep who lost against Zeta-Jones after all.

Tony Awards

Of 2-Tony roles (mostly a phenomenon w/2000s revivals), ones w/2+ Drama Desk noms (All have had 2 Tony noms since Drama Desks started), in winning order: Medea, Fences’ Rose, Real Thing’s Henry, Angels in America’s Prior, Private Lives’ Amanda, Virginia Woolf’s George, Long Day’s Journey’s James.

The most Tonys acting-dominant play in a year is 1984’s Real Thing with its two lead wins and a supporting win. The most actressing-dominant is August Osage County, and the most actor-dominant is Angels in America which did equally well both years. I understand the latter two given the writing/roles, but not the 1st one at all.

No Off-Broadway play has won Actor + Actress Drama Desks. No play has won Actor + Actress at Tonys and Drama Desks. Musicals are much less of a factor at the Oscars, but South Pacific is the only one to get 4 acting Tonys. The adaptation was mostly ignored. The other 2 to get the so-called Big 6 were also adapted, with decent but not memorable awards results.

Picture & Director: Surprises, Classic Showdowns, & Robberies

For classic showdowns, only counting BPs nommed for BD. Classics aka movies with 100+ points on They Shoot Pictures Don’t They.
29 Divine Lady only Pic-snubbed BD (though only triple nom) – It lost its acting nom, as did Broadway Melody. Lloyd won on this his 1st try & his 2nd. Beaumont wasn’t nommed otherwise
39 Gone/Wizard/Stagecoach – Oz is a special case as Fleming had 2 BP nominees that are considered amazeballs the first year that a director couldn’t get 2 BD noms, though it didn’t get acting noms (Garland got like a kids’ prize.). However, arguably Fleming who didn’t get another dir nom wasn’t the source of the films’ visions. Still, John Ford does not need 5 wins. And Gone with the Wind is the biggest film evah with the most iconic actressing evah w/2 wins/4. Stagecoach won its only acting nom.
41 How Green>Citizen Kane +1200 point difference on TSPDT – Ford had 4 wins (inc none of his 4 movies in the T100); this was the only one that also won BP. Plus, Hearst’s power. Welles wasn’t nominated again despite other iconic directorial and acting efforts; the film’s only acting nom. Green also won ½ acting noms.
44 Going My Way>Indemnity +107 – McCarey’s 2nd nom & 2nd win, Wilder’s 1st nom w/2 later wins. Both of the former’s acting nominees won. Stanwyck lost for an iconic perf because Bergman (in her 1st of 3 wins) lost the year before as the frontrunner.
48 Hamlet only Edit/Wtg-snubbed T2 win – John Huston won BD in a split, of 5 noms vs. Olivier’s 1. Walter Huston won the former’s only acting nom, while Olivier won his only Oscar (of 9 noms) of his film’s 2 acting noms.
49 A Letter to 3 Wives only Edit/Act-snubbed T2 win – Split. Mankiewicz’ 1st nom. Rossen’s King’s Men was his 1st of 2 losses and won 2 acting Oscars of 3 noms.
50 Eve/Sunset – Mankiewicz’ 2nd consecutive win, Wilder had 1. One of 2 years with full slate of nominees having a combo of 4 noms/wins (w/each having a career win).
64 Fair Lady>Strangelove +221 – Cukor’s 5th try through 30+ years, Kubrick’s 1st. Kubrick’s only BD nominee w/an acting nom, Fair won 1/3.
71 French>Clockwork +112 – Kubrick’s 3rd nom, Friedkin’s 1st (w/1/2 acting noms).
74 Godfather Two/Chinatown – Polanski’s 1st nom, Coppola’s 2nd after winning BP but not BD. Polanski got his makeup about 3 decades later. 1/5 & 0/2 acting noms.
75 One Flew #132>Barry & Nashville – Forman’s 1st, Kubrick’s 4th & last try, Altman’s 2nd of 5 tries.  Flew won both lead Oscars, Nashville lost 0/2 sup. One of 2 years with full slate having a combo of 4 noms/wins – w/4 never winning (of 5 icons, only Hitchcock’s out) & 1 w/2 wins.
77 Annie Hall/Star Wars – Lucas’ 2nd & last try, Allen’s 1st w/5 later losses. Annie Hall ½ lead noms, Star Wars had a sup nom.
80 Ordinary>Raging Bull +275 – 1st tries for both though Redford was previously nommed for acting; Scorsese’d wait for his 6th before winning (a # not even including Taxi Driver which was pushed for 2 foreigns). Raging & Ordinary each won an acting award considered among the best choices ever. DGA: Ordinary.
89 Daisy only Dir-snubbed BP w/full dir slate; only DGA-snubbed Bafta-losing T2 win
90 Wolves>Goodfellas +104 – Costner’s only try, Scorsese’s 3rd. Wolves had one more acting nom but Goodfellas had one more win. DGA: Wolves.
95 Sense & Sensibility only T2 snub despite T3 precursor noms & winning one, only snub when the year’s only contender w/T3 precursor noms, only snub winning 3/T6 precursors 3 diff orgs
00 Crouching Tiger only loss (& a double loss in fact) w/DGA/Bafta T2 win/GG Dir vs. Traffic only Bafta-snubbed win after losing DGA to BD nominee (Crouching is also only foreign language film to get T3 precursors.)
05 Brokeback only T2 loss w/critics’ consensus, only T2 loss to winner it beat for DGA/Bafta, only T2 loss w/top prize at T4 precursors (/8 who did this) vs. Crash ½ GG Dir snubbed T2 win w/o Bafta or DGA – Ang Lee: Only 2-time DGA winner w/o 2 T2 Oscars, only 2xGG-Dir-winning Bafta winner w/o T2 awards, only director w/o BP w/a lifetime haul of the Globe, Bafta, DGA, & NYFCC. Gibson’s only nom w/0 acting noms vs. Sense’s 2. Soderbergh was only nommed that year, though Traffic won its only acting nom. Haggis hasn’t been nommed since and Crash lost its only acting nom while Brokeback lost its 3.
Notable also is Kubrick, though his most-acclaimed missed BP; at least his T4 efforts were all nominated (a la Wilder) unlike Hitchcock. Hitchcock got BD w/o BP 3x, while Rebecca won BP, but Vertigo/Northwest/Notorious were ignored for the likes of Spellbound/Lifeboat.
